Ahead 6-3 through four innings, Southern Maine exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth to earn the 11-3 five-inning win over the Warriors to complete the sweep. Junior Amber Kelly (Berwick, Maine/Noble) picked up the win with a strong performance in the circle allowing two earned runs on seven hits and three walks with a pair of strikeouts. USM pounded out nine hits in the victory including three extra base hits.
USM fell behind early 1-0 after the top of the first on an RBI ground from Valentine, but bounced back with three runs in the home half of the first on an RBI double from Cross and a two-run RBI double from senior Shelby Obert (Norridgewock, Maine/Skowhegan). ECSU tied the game up with two runs in the top of the fourth on a pair of RBI singles from seniors Rebecca DeFeo (Richmond, R.I.) and Samantha Bardos (Norwalk, Conn.), but the Huskies answered back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to snag a 6-3 lead. Kelly got the first two outs of the fifth against ECSU on big defensive plays from Cross, including a diving grab for the second out in centerfield. Kelly gave up a two-out double to senior Gina Georgetti (Milford, Conn.) and a walk to freshman Crysta Wolski (West Hartford, Conn.) before ending the inning on a ground out.
After a pair of spectacular defensive plays in the outfield, Cross led off the ining with a single through the left side to start the Huskies’ big fifth inning. After back-to-back hit-by-pitches issued to senior Samantha Crosman (South Berwick, Maine/Marshwood) and Obert, Cross came around to score on a wild pitch. A pair of walks led to the Huskies’ second run, including an RBI base-on-balls to Lux, making it 8-3 in favor of USM before ECSU notched its second out of the game on a fielder’s choice out at home. With two down and the bases full, Davis again stepped into the batter’s box and hit a deep single into center field, clearing the bases for the 11-3 final. Davis finished the day 2-for-6 at the plate with four RBI. Both of her hits her game-winners.
