WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Senior Paul McDonough (Wells, Maine) went 4 for 4, including two doubles and a home run, with five RBI to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 17-3 victory over the DePauw University Tigers in non-conference action Monday at Chain O Lakes Stadium.

With the win, the Huskies finished their 11-game Florida trip with a 7-4 mark.  The Tigers slipped to 12-4 on the season.

McDonough hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot, in the second inning as USM built a 5-0 lead over the first two innings.  The senior walked and scored in the fourth, stroked a two-run double in the fifth and had an RBI double in the sixth, and finished his day with a single in the eighth.  McDonough’s sixth-inning double was the 200th hit of his career making him the 27th player in school history to reach that milestone.

Southern Maine pounded three DePauw for 18 hits marking the fourth straight game that USM has had 13 or more hits.  Senior Matt Bender (Walpole, Mass.) was 3 for 4 with three runs scored and an RBI.  Sophomore Zach Quintal (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood), rookies Andrew Olszak (Danvers, Mass.) and Dylan Hapworth (Winslow, Maine) and sophomore Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) had two hits apiece.  Hapworth also had four RBI.

Freshman right-handed pitcher Gage Feeney (Cutler, Maine/Washington Academy) was the beneficiary of the Huskies offensive outburst.  Feeney, who retired the first eight batters he faced, went six innings allowing two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out eight to earn his first win.

Seniors Reid Pittard (Lafayette, Ind.) and Zach Wade (Highland Park, Ill.) had two hits apiece for the Tigers.  Wade had a triple and scored twice, and Pittard had a double and two RBI.  Senior southpaw Riley Futterknecht (Bristol, Ind.) started on the mound and was tagged with the loss after going just 1.2 innings.

USM scored an unearned run in the first inning on a Hapworth sacrifice fly, then added four more run in the second to take a 5-0 lead.  Sophomore Kaleb Bridgham (Minot, Maine/Poland Regional) drove in Dexter with a single and scored in front of McDonough on the senior’s round tripper.  Bender would score another unearned run on an infield error.

DePauw got on the board in the third when Wade tripled with two outs for the first hit off Feeney, and came home to score on a Pittard single.  Pittard also had an RBI double in the fifth.

The Huskies blew the game open scoring four runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to make it 17-2.  Hapworth had the big blow in the fourth with a three-run homer.  McDonough’s two-run double sparked the fifth inning uprising.  McDonough, Quintal and Olszak had RBI in the sixth.
