SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine—The Southern Maine Community College men’s basketball team captured its eighth conference win in its 96-78 defeat of the College of St. Joseph (VT) at the HUB on Saturday, Jan. 14.
In an evening with many notable performances, the SeaWolves shared the workload in shooting a season-best 60.9 percent from the floor. Sophomore Chase Soares (Falmouth, Mass.) put together his most complete performance yet recording 13 points, a career-high 15 assists, and seven rebounds. Junior captain John Morgan (Sanford, Maine) poured in 24 points, and sophomore Ryan Cloutier (Pelham, N.H.) finished with 20 points, shooting 77 percent from the floor (10-13) with five blocks. Sophomore Dylan Silvestri (Pelham, N.H.) was two rebounds shy of a double-double with 15 points and eight rebounds coming off the bench.
The SMCC men assisted on 28 of 39 baskets and capitalized on points off turnovers with 25. The SeaWolves never trailed in the game, going ahead 2-0 on a made layup by Cloutier in the first possession of the game. SMCC outscored its opponent 35-45 in the first half and by an eight-point margin in the second to pick up the 18-point victory.
