WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College field hockey team wrapped up their 2017 season with a 1-0 senior day victory over North Atlantic Conference (NAC) opponent Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday afternoon at Bernatchez Field.
In the win, the Terriers snap a 12-game skid as they finish the season at 2-12 (1-4 NAC) overall while the Chargers move to 9-7 (1-4 NAC) on the year.
The Terriers opened the scoring late in the 27th minute of the first as Katie Taylor (Lebanon, Maine) sent a centering pass to Miranda Gagne (Winslow, Maine) in front. Gagne’s backhand shot beat Charger keeper Abby Ladd to the right side for a 1-0 lead.
Colby-Sawyer looked tie the game up three minutes later as Jordan Teixeira tried to chip the ball over Thomas senior Jessica Russell (Pembroke, N.H.). Russell swatted the ball out to keep the Terriers’ lead before the break.
The score remained the same throughout the second half as both teams struggled to create opportunities. Russell came up big in the 48th minute on a shot from Sierra Schuster and again in the 65th on Paige Viens.
Russell stopped all three shots in her first career win for Thomas while Ladd shouldered the loss with five saves.
Thomas outshot the Chargers 9-5 on the day and held a 12-1 advantage in corners.
