BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University field hockey team (10-5) defeated the Colby-Sawyer Chargers (9-8), 3-1, in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Semi-Final field hockey match-up at the Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex on Friday afternoon.
This is the fourth straight NAC Championship final for the Eagles.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Eagles had their way in the first half and netted a 1-0 lead five minutes into the game. Taylor Shaw received a beautiful pass from Abby Dyer and put her squad up early.
16 minutes later, Mikayla Toth was the beneficiary of a penalty stroke opportunity and beat Vermont native, Abby Land, to her left-hand side.
Land played a great first half for the Chargers and kept the game as close as possible by making nine saves.
Taylor Shaw added some insurance for the #1 seeded Eagles with a goal at the 55-minute mark. Husson lead 3-0.
Colby-Sawyer was not ready to end their season. Paige Viens and Chelsea Ballard put together a quick breakaway. Ballard played the ball ahead to Viens, who did the rest of the work. The Chargers trailed 3-1 with 12 minutes left to play.
Dispite the late charge, the Eagles held off the #4 seeded Chargers for the 3-1 victory.
Husson’s Anne Marie Provencal posted seven saves in the HU victory while Abby Ladd recorded 19 stops in a losing effort for the Chargers.
The Eagles held impressive leads in shots (37-11), shots on goal (22-8), and penalty corners (17-6) in the victory.
The #1 Husson University Eagles will play the #2 University of Maine at Farmington Beavers tomorrow, Saturday, October 28, at 2:00 pm at the Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex.
