|Colby College||University of New England|
BIDDEFORD, Maine — Vonde Saunders (Center Conway, N.H.) and Kersey Boulay (Liberty, Maine) accounted for three 1st-half goals as the University of New England recorded a 3-0 field hockey victory over Colby College on Monday evening (Sep. 12) at the Big Blue Turf.
The Nor’easters (4-1) ended a four-game skid against the Mules (1-2) with the result. Each of the last two seasons, Colby had edged UNE by a goal.
Big Blue came out strong and Saunders converted the team’s fifth shot less than six minutes into the contest to establish the lead.
The visitors had a couple quality chances shortly thereafter, but UNE goalie Holly Smith (Peabody, Mass.) calmly knocked them away from danger.
Boulay redirected a drive off the stick of Nicole Matarozzo (Wolfeboro, N.H.) in the 27th minute to make it 2-0, and Saunders padded the cushion in the 34th minute.
Scoring opportunities were limited both ways in the 2nd half, even though Colby had five penalty corners. For the match, the Mules held a 9-5 advantage in the category, but were out-shot 16-12 by UNE.
Smith finished with eight stops to preserve her second straight shutout for the Nor’easters, who open Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play on Saturday versus Western New England University (1 p.m.).
For Colby, which visits Williams College the same day (11 a.m.), Riley Whitmyer (Bentlyville, Ohio) and Emily Buckman (Chatham, N.J.) each logged 35 minutes in goal, combining for five saves.
