WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College Softball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Colby College in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon.

The Mules improve to 7-12 on the year while the Terriers move to 3-13 in the loss.

Ella Hommeyer put the Mules on the scoreboard in the top of the first as her single to left field brought home Katie McLaughlin for a 1-0 lead.  McLaughlin attempted to stretch the single into a double and she was thrown out at second base by Madison Bentz (Ottawa, Illinois) to end the inning.

The Terriers answered in the bottom half of the second as Lexi Colpack (Franklin, N.H.) reached on a hit by pitch and Kayla Bess (Madison, Maine) got on by a bunt single that moved Colpack to third.  Lauren Guppy (New Sharon, Maine) bunted for a single to score Colpack, tying the game at 1-1.

Errors were costly for the Terriers in the top of the sixth as the Mules pushed across two runs. Robin Spofford reached second base on an error with one out.  McLaughlin followed with a base hit up the middle to move Spofford to third.  Spofford took off on errant throw from the outfield to plate the go-ahead run.  Skylar Labbe hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in McLaughlin a 3-1 lead.

The Terriers threatened in the final frame as Bentz doubled down the right field line and Katie Taylor (Lebanon, Maine) reached on an infield single.  Mules’ pitcher Julia Saul took control on the mound to get the final two outs, finishing the scoring at 3-1.

Sydney LeBourveau (Jericho, Vt.) was given the loss on the mound for Thomas with a complete game effort, allowing four hits and three runs (two earned).  For Colby, Saul finished with seven innings pitched, giving up eight hits and one run in the win.
