CLERMONT, Fla. — Kathleen Mason drove in three runs and Katie McLaughlin had three hits for the Colby College softball team in a 7-5 win over St. Lawrence University in the first game of a doubleheader Monday.
The Saints (5-1 overall) took a 14-2 win in five innings in the nightcap.
The Mules (2-2 overall) broke a 2-2 tie with five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning of the opener. Colby then held on as the Saints scored two in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Julia Saul earned her first victory of the season with six innings of work. She scattered six hits, struck out one, and walked one. First-year Lucie Cunningham earned her first collegiate save by pitching the seventh inning and not allowing an earned run.
The Mules had 11 hits and six walks in the first game. Robin Spofford continued her hot hitting with two hits and two runs. Spofford leads the Mules after four games with a .538 batting average and five runs scored.
Wiley Holton helped the Mules with a pair of RBI, a hit, and a run scored. Grace Farnkoff smacked an RBI double and scored, while Holly Lallis had one hit and one run.
The Saints took a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third inning. Spofford led off with a bunt single and moved to second when Skylar Labbe reached on an error by the pitcher. With two outs and the runners on second and third, Mason doubled to right field to score both runs and tie the game. Mason is batting .462.
Colby went to work in the fourth inning with five runs and more clutch hitting. Lallis had a one-out bunt single, moved to second on an infield single by Katie McLaughlin, and both runners advanced when Spofford reached on an error to load the bases.
After a second Colby out in the fourth, the Mules received straight hits to go ahead for good. Holton had a two-run single to center field, Farnkoff doubled through the left side to bring home Holton and Spofford, and Mason drove in her third run with a single to center.
The Saints had a two-run homer from Caitlin Syphurs in the sixth inning and had another run score on a wild pitch in the seventh. Cunningham got the final out on a pop up to third base.
St. Lawrence scored six runs in the first two innings and added seven runs in the fourth.
Spofford, Ella Hommeyer, Farnkoff, and Carly Swartz had hits in the second game for Colby. Paige Hartnett and Farnkoff scored runs in the top of the fourth.
