FORT MYERS, Fla. — John Baron pitched five strong innings to earn the win and Jackson Ward was dominating in relief to lead the Colby College baseball team to a 3-1 win over St. Joseph’s College Long Island on Wednesday in Florida.
St. Joseph’s (6-4 overall) held on for a 7-6 win over the Mules in the nightcap.
Baron allowed just four hits, struck out three, and walked four to earn his first collegiate victory. Ward pitched the final two innings, struck out six, and did not allow a hit or walk in recording his first collegiate save.
Colby (3-4) scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, Ryan Quinn doubled to right field and then scored on Andrew Della Volpe’s double. Keenan Iuliano singled to left field to bring in Della Volpe, who is second on the team in batting average at .471. Quinn is hitting .429 and Iuliano is at .400 on the young season.
After the Golden Eagles scored their lone run in the fourth, the Mules added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Jackson Ward, who is leading the Mules in batting average (.500), singled up the middle to lead off. Two straight ground outs put Ward to third base and Tyler Mulberry singled up the middle to bring Ward in for the final run.
