FORT MYERS, Fla. — John Baron pitched five strong innings to earn the win and Jackson Ward was dominating in relief to lead the Colby College baseball team to a 3-1 win over St. Joseph’s College Long Island on Wednesday in Florida.
St. Joseph’s (6-4 overall) held on for a 7-6 win over the Mules in the nightcap.
St. Joseph’s scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning of the second game, but the Mules came back with two runs in the second, two more in the third, and a lone run in the fourth for a 5-3 lead. The Golden Eagles went ahead for good with four runs in the fourth inning.
Ryder Arsenault, hitting .385 this season, had three hits and a stolen base for Colby. Iuliano, Quinn, and Mulberry all had two hits. Matt Mitchell went 1-for-1 and walked three times, while Ward and Della Volpe both had one hit and one run.
Quinn had a one-out single to center field in the second inning and advanced to third when Iuliano doubled. George Schmidt hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Quinn, while Mitchell doubled to left to bring in Iuliano.
The Mules went up 4-3 in the third inning when Matt Garcia was hit by a pitch with two outs. Mulberry singled and Quinn walked to load the bases. Iuliano’s single to center field brought in Garcia and Mulberry.
In the Colby fourth, Mitchell walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on a ground out. Ward followed with a single to center field to score the Mules’ fifth run.
Quinn cut the St. Joseph’s lead to 7-6 in the fifth inning. He had a bunt single, moved to second on a wild pitch, and took third on a long fly out. Della Volpe tripled to right to bring Quinn in for the final run.
Andrew Sterup had Colby’s best pitching performance, going 1.2 innings without allowing a run and striking out one.
