CLERMONT, Fla. — Skylar Labbe had three hits and drove in four runs for the Colby College softball team in a 9-1 victory over D’Youville College in the opening two games of the 2017 season in Florida.

The Mules (1-1 overall) lost a tight 4-2 game to Plymouth State in the opening game of the day.
Wiley Holton allowed just one earned run, struck out four, and walked two in the game shortened to five innings due to softball’s eight-run rule.
Robin Spofford had two hits, two runs, two RBI, and a walk from the second spot in the order. Emily Dougherty and Kathleen Mason both had two hits and two runs, Holly Lallis scored twice and had a hit, and Katie McLaughlin drove in two runs, had a hit, and scored.
Colby’s bottom of the order combined to go 5-for-9 and scored six runs against D’Youville.
The Mules had two big innings in their victory. Colby scored five runs in the second inning and added four in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.
Dougherty singled with one out, while Mason and Lallis both reached on errors to load the bases. McLaughlin followed with a two-run single for the first two runs of the game. Spofford singled to bring in Lallis, Labbe doubled to plate McLaughlin, and Paige Hartnett’s RBI ground out brought in Spofford.
D’Youville scored one run in the top of the fourth to cut the margin to 5-1.
Dougherty got things going again in the fifth inning with another single with one out. With two outs and the bases loaded, Spofford singled to bring in Dougherty. Labbe ended the game with a bases clearing single.
In the Plymouth State contest, both starting pitchers had solid games. Colby’s Julia Saul pitched five-plus innings and had two strikeouts and no walks. Panther pitcher Caitlyn Miller worked six innings, struck out six, and walked four.
Colby took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. McLaughlin and Spofford both singled to start the inning and Labbe walked to load the bases. Ella Hommeyer walked to bring in McLaughlin.
The Panthers scored a lone run in the fourth inning and had three runs in the fifth.
In the top of the seventh, Spofford had a one-out single, moved to second on a walk to Labbe, and then the bases were loaded when Hartnett singled. Hommeyer grounded out to third base to bring in Spofford for the lone run.
