WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College women’s basketball team fell to Castleton University, 70-44, in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) contest on Friday night at Larry Mahaney Gymnasium.
In the loss, the Terriers drop down to 8-14 (5-10 NAC) while the regionally ranked Spartans improve to 18-4 (14-2 NAC).
The Spartans defense came out strong in the opening frame as they forced the Terriers into seven turnovers. A pair of buckets from Amanda Beatty and a three pointer from Alexis Quenneville paced Castleton to a 15-11 advantage. Malorie Weaver (Palermo, Maine) chipped in with two layups for Thomas to keep her team within four.
Castleton extended their lead in the second quarter led by Quenneville’s nine points as she knocked down three shots from behind the arch to go up 32-23 at the break. Karli Stubbs (Auburn, Maine) and Amira Jones (Chicopee, Mass.) each hit a three for half of the Terriers’ points in the quarter.
The Terriers offensive struggles continued through the third on 3-of-12 shooting from the field as Stubbs netted eight of ten points. Beatty added another seven points for a strong 53-33 lead going into the final frame for the Spartans.
The Spartans outscored the Terriers 17-11 in the fourth to cruised to a 70-44 victory.
Beatty held a game-high 19 points along with six rebounds for the Spartans while Quenneville finished with 16 points.
Stubbs recorded 15 points and five boards for the Terriers while Molly Carroll (Southwest Harbor, Maine) added six points and three rebounds off the bench.
The Terriers will face Green Mountain College for senior night tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
