CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men’s basketball fell to Castleton University 74-69, in overtime on Friday night, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action inside of Smith Gymnasium.

The first half proved to be a closely contested 20 minutes between the two teams, as they exchanged the lead six times. Castleton’s Ben Mrowka opened up the game with a three, but the Mariners scored seven-unanswered points to take a 7-3 lead at 17:08.

Maine Maritime built their biggest lead of the half at 11:38 following a layup from Tyler Gilson (Thomaston, Maine), but the Spartans chipped away at the deficit and took a 19-18 advantage at 7:11.

The Mariners responded with a three from Nicholas DePatsy (Waldoboro, Maine) to retake a 21-19 lead, but Castleton scored four-straight to take a 25-24 lead at 4:26. Another three from DePatsy put the Mariners up 27-25 with 3:12 to go in the half, but the Spartans outscored Maine Maritime 8-3 to close out the period and took a 33-30 lead into the intermission.

DePatsy led the Mariners in the first half with 13 points, while Chad Copeland led Castleton with 14 points.

The two teams exchange the lead numerous times in the second half, until the Spartans used an eight-point run to take a 53-47 lead into the final six minutes of regulation. The Mariners answered by scoring four-straight, capped off by a three from DePatsy, to cut the deficit to four with four minutes to go, but Copeland made a layup at 1:47 to make it a six-point game.

Following a free throw from Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine), DePatsy and Brendan Newcomb (Holden, Maine) both drained threes to give the Mariners a 61-60 lead, but Copeland made a basketball and hit two from the line to give the Spartans a 64-61 lead with five seconds to go. Newcomb hit a long three as time expired to send the game into overtime.

Newcomb and Castleton’s Pavin Parrish exchanged threes to open up overtime, and after over two minutes of scoreless play the Spartans used a basket from Tondi Mushandu to take a two-point lead at 1:56. Thayer hit one from the line to cut the gap to one, but Copeland made another layup to make it a three-point game. The Spartans made three-of-four from the line in the final minute to hang on for the victory.

DePatsy led the Mariners with 22 points, including six three-pointers, two steals and a rebounds, Thayer added 12 points, a game-high seven assists, three rebounds, and a steal, and Nick Judge (Cushing, Maine) contributed 11 points, five rebounds, five assists, and four steals.

Copeland finished the evening with a game-high 30 points, five rebounds, three assists, and a block and Edmund Fitzgerald added 18 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double, while also tallying four blocks and two assists.

The Mariners fall to 4-18 on the season and 1-14 in the conference, while the Spartans improve to 15-6 overall and 10-5 in the NAC. Maine Maritime returns to action tomorrow, Saturday, February 11, when they host Green Mountain College at 1:00 pm, the Spartans remain on the road to take on Husson University tomorrow, also at 1:00 pm.
