CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women’s basketball fell to Castleton University, 60-49, on Friday night in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play inside of Smith Gymnasium.
The Spartans took a 2-0 lead on a layup from Amanda Beatty to open up the game, but the Mariners responded with five-unanswered points to take a 5-2 lead at 8:43. The Spartans tied the game up at 6-6 at 6:43, but the Mariners built as much as a six-point lead, following a three-point play by Eryn Doiron (Wilton, Maine) at 2:23.
Maine Maritime controlled the second quarter, taking another six-point lead with 6:51 to go, after a jumper from Amanda Holewiak (Somerset, Mass.) and a three from Caitlin Kane (Wilton, Maine). The Spartans chipped away at the lead late in the quarter, following a four-point run to cut the deficit to 27-26, but Megan McLean (Eliot, Maine) hit two from the line to close out the half and sent the Mariners into halftime with a 29-26 lead.
The two teams exchanged the lead early in the third quarter, and entered the final quarter tied at 40-40.
The Spartans scored six-straight to open up the fourth quarter, and took a 46-40 lead. The Mariners cut the deficit to two, with 6:47 remaining but Castleton outscored the Mariners 10-2 in the final four minutes to take the victory.
McLean led the Mariners with 12 points, six assists, four rebounds, and a steal, and both Kane and Alayne Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.) ended the evening with 10 points. Kane added three assists and two rebounds, while Felix chipped in with two rebounds, two steals, and an assist.
Castleton’s Beatty led all players with 28 points, while also adding six rebounds, a steal and a block. Makayla Farrara added 11 points, six rebounds, and five assists.
The Mariners fall to 11-11 overall and 7-8 in the conference, while the Spartans improve to 14-8 on the season and 12-3 in the NAC. Maine Maritime hosts Green Mountain College tomorrow at 3:00 pm, while Castleton travels to take on Husson also at 3:00 pm.
