WATERVILLE, Maine — Scottie Todd pitched a four-hit shutout in the first game and Callie MacDonald tossed a complete game in the nightcap for Brandeis University in 11-0 and 5-2 victories over Colby College in non-conference softball Sunday.
Brandeis improves to 13-16 overall, while the Mules end the season at 11-19.
Todd struck out seven and walked one in a game shortened to six innings due to the eight-run rule.
The game was closer than the final score indicates. Brandeis led 3-0 after five innings, but exploded for eight runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Allison Hecht smacked a two-run double to drive in PJ Ross and Madison Hunter for a 5-0 lead. Brianna Urena singled to bring in Amanda Shore and Hecht with two more runs. Todd helped her own cause with an RBI single to plate Urena, while Hunter got her second hit of the inning on an RBI double to score Todd for a 9-0 margin. Ross and Marysa Massoia both had RBI singles to score the final two runs.
The Judges had two runs in the first inning after Todd doubled with one out. Marissa DeLaurentis walked and Hunter singled to load the bases. The Mules got the second out of the inning and had two strikes on Hecht, but her single brought in Todd and DeLaurentis.
Keri Lehtonen had an RBI single in the top of the fifth inning to make it 3-0. She finished the day with three hits and the RBI, while Hunter had three hits and scored twice. Todd, Hecht, Massoia, and Urena all had two hits.
Katie McLaughlin had her 100th career hit for Colby with a single to center field in the fifth inning. She also had the Mules’ lone walk and stole a base. Robin Spofford added two hits and Skylar Labbe had one hit.
In the second game, Lehtonen had two hits and two RBI. Hunter and Hecht both had two hits, an RBI, and one run. The Judges had five doubles in the game.
McLaughlin finished her career with 102 hits after adding two more hits in the second game to go with an RBI. Paige Hartnett and Vanessa Warshaw both had one hit and one run.
DeLaurentis doubled with two outs in the first inning and Hunter followed with a double to plate the first run.
The Judges added two more runs in the second. Hecht led off with a single, took second on a sacrifice bunt by Caroline Sippin, and later scored on a double by Urena. Lehtonen singled to bring in Urena for a 3-0 lead.
Warshaw led off the Colby third inning with a single, took second on a ground out, and scored on McLaughlin’s double.
Brandeis added lone runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Sippin reached on an error in the fourth, took second when Urena walked, and scored on Lehtonen’s single. Hunter had a one-out double in the fifth inning and scored on Hecht’s two-out double.
The Mules scored the final run in the bottom of the seventh. Paige Hartnett led off with a double, moved to third on a ground out, and scored on an error.
MacDonald struck out five, walked none, and allowed just one earned run for the Judges in game two.
