STANDISH, Maine – Bowdoin College (23-6, 5-1 NESCAC) swept Saint Joseph’s College (9-13, 5-3 GNAC) with 9-5 and 11-0 victories in non-conference softball action at Richard W. Bailey Field on Tuesday evening.
The Polar Bears were in control from the start in the nightcap, as the visitors scored six runs in the first and tacked on two in the third and three in the fourth to stake an 11-0 cushion.
The Monks were held to just one hit – senior left fielder Casidee Couture (Jay, Maine) doubled in the bottom of the third and was the only SJC batter to reach base in the mercy-rule loss.
Bowdoin sophomore starter Samantha Roy (Washington, D.C.) and freshman Allison Rutz (Essex Junction, Vt.) combined to toss five innings of one-hit ball with a pair of punch-outs. The duo faced just one batter over the minimum in the five-inning triumph.
SJC freshman starter Kate Whitney (Jonesboro, Maine) took the loss and falls to 1-4 on the season after yielding six runs (four earned) off 10 hits in 1.1 innings. Freshman Caitlyn King (Old Town, Maine) gave up five runs off seven hits and a walk with three K’s in 3.2 innings of relief.
