WATERVILLE, Maine — Julia Bottone scored 3:08 into the second half and Julia Patterson gave Bowdoin College an insurance goal in a 2-0 victory over Colby College in NESCAC women’s soccer Wednesday.

Bowdoin moves to 9-4 overall and 5-3 in league play, while the Mules drop to 6-7 and 1-7 in the conference.
The Polar Bears had a 12-0 shot advantage and a 7-2 margin in corner kicks, but Colby goalkeeper Sam Rizzo made five of her seven saves in the opening half and Colby’s defense refused to break down from the pressure.
Patterson had the assist on the opening goal when she pushed a pass off the dribble to Bottone, who shot from about 15 yards out to the lower left corner.
The Polar Bears finished the game with a 20-6 shot advantage and an 11-3 margin in corner kicks. Despite the statistical difference, Colby nearly tied the game with 9:01 to play when Katherine Gillespie beat Bowdoin goalkeeper Rachel Stout to a 50-50 ball about eight yards off the right post. Gillespie took a low shot, but defender Lizzie Sands was on the right post and blocked the shot away.
Less than two minutes later, the Polar Bears put the game away when Patterson scored her third of the year when she hammered home a cross from Claire Dardinski.
Bowdoin’s best chance in the first half came from Morgen Gallagher, who came in on goal with a defender to her right and had her shot deflected away by Rizzo with about 17 minutes to intermission.
Colby’s other opportunity was in the second half from Laura Arnold, who was running on to a cross with a Bowdoin defender and booted a low shot that forced Stout to make a diving stop.
Stout had three saves in the second half to earn her fifth shutout.
