WATERVILLE, Maine — Katie Hoadley pitched a four-hit shutout in a 3-0 win in the second game and Emily Griffin went all eight innings in a 2-1 victory for Bowdoin College in a tight doubleheader sweep of Colby College in NESCAC East play Saturday.

The Polar Bears (20-6 overall, 5-1 NESCAC) reached 20 wins on the season. The Mules drop to 7-15 overall and 0-6 in the league.
Hoadley struck out six and walked two in moving to 4-0 on the season.
The Polar Bears scored lone runs in the first, third, and fifth innings. Griffin and Marisa O’Toole had back-to-back singles with one out. The Mules got the second out, but Caroline Rice singled to bring in Griffin.
Rice went 4-for-4 and had all three RBI in the nightcap. O’Toole added two hits and one run for the winners.
Allison Rutz had a one-out single in the third and immediately scored when Rice followed with a triple.
O’Toole doubled to start the fifth inning and Rice added a double with one out to bring in the final run.
Robin Spofford, the NESCAC’s leading hitter at the start of the day, went 2-for-3 in the second game for Colby. Katie McLaughlin and Skylar Labbe had the other Mule hits.
Griffin and Colby pitcher Wiley Holton each had fine games in the opener. Griffin (8-2) gave up four hits, struck out five, and walked one. Holton allowed six hits in eight innings, struck out three, and walked three. Holton also worked 3.2 innings and allowed just one earned run in the opener.
The two teams each scored in the fourth inning. Griffin had a one-out triple and scored when O’Toole hit a hard shot to third base for an infield single.
McLaughlin singled to start the bottom of the fourth and took second on Labbe’s single. The Mules scored in unusual fashion on a missed bunt attempt. Labbe had gotten too far off first base and Polar Bear catcher Claire McCarthy threw down to Rice at first base. Rice chased after Labbe and tagged her just before second base, but McLaughlin kept on running and scored from second.
O’Toole smacked a long home run to left field with two strikes on her in the eighth inning. Griffin had a strikeout and had two grounders to shortstop to get the Mules 1-2-3 in the bottom of the eighth.
