LEWISTON, Maine — First-year Kirsten Pelletier tossed a complete game, striking out five along the way but the Bates softball team fell 3-0 to Bowdoin Friday afternoon at Lafayette Street Field.
Pelletier (Sidney, Maine) allowed only two earned runs on six hits and walked just one on the day.
Meanwhile, Bowdoin starter Katie Hoadley (6-0) tossed a complete game shutout, allowing three hits and striking out six.
Sophomore Andrea Russo (Cheshire, Conn.) recorded the Bobcats’ first hit on the day with a single to start the bottom of the fourth. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt but got stranded there.
Junior Tori Fitzgerald (Holliston, Mass.) singled to begin the bottom of the fifth. Hoadley worked around that hit thanks to a line out and a double play.
With game scoreless, Bowdoin (25-8, 7-3 NESCAC) got on the board with two outs in the top of the sixth thanks to a Marisa O’Toole solo home run.
Russo singled with two outs in the bottom of the sixth but got caught stealing to end the inning.
The Polar Bears added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh.
With two outs and nobody on, Claire McCarthy singled to right field. Samantha Valdivia followed with a single of her own and pinch runner Lauren Nguyen scored on a Bobcat error. Valdivia advanced to second on the play and came around to score on a Jordan Gowdy single.
Bates (10-14, 1-7 NESCAC) went down in order in the bottom of the seventh.
