AMHERST, Mass. – The Bowdoin women’s soccer team surrendered a late goal to Amherst and fell 1-0 in their NESCAC opener on Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears are now 1-1-0 (0-1-0 NESCAC), while Amherst remains perfect at 2-0-0 (2-0-0 NESCAC).

Morgen Gallagher nearly gave Bowdoin the advantage in the 59th minute, powering a shot towards goal from 30-yards out, but the attempt rang off the crossbar and Amherst was able to get a clear to keep the game even.

The Mammoths created a solid offensive chance with 14:45 remaining in the contest, with Eden Charles cutting back on a defender at the top of the box and dishing a pass to Hannah Guzzi  on the left side. Drawing two Polar Bears to the ball, Guzzi passed to Rubii Tamen who got an open look, but her shot went just wide of net.

Breaking through three minutes later, Amherst tallied what stood as the game-winning goal with 11:30left to play. Racing towards a long throw in from mid field, Guzzi put a shot on frame. Sabrina Albanese turned away the first attempt but was unable to fully control the ball as a charging Guzzi buried her own rebound to give Amherst a 1-0 lead.

Amherst outshot the Polar Bears by a 12-9 margin. Both teams earned five corner kicks.

Albanese made four stops in net for the Polar Bears, while Chelsea Cutler had five saves for Amherst.
