Junior defenseman Alyson Matteau scored a pair of goals and assisted on sophomore right wing Jessica Jacques’ game-winner as the University of Maine women’s ice hockey team won its Hockey East opener, 4-2, over Boston University at Alfond Arena in Orono in a rare Friday afternoon game.
Sophomore center Vendula Pribylova had a goal and an assist for the Black Bears, who have now won five of their last six games and improved to 5-2 overall.
Boston University fell to 0-4 overall and in the conference.
First-period goals 49 seconds apart by Matteau and Pribylova staked UMaine to a 2-0 lead and Jacques expanded the lead 7:35 into the second period.
Nata Elia’s second-period goal and Victoria Bach’s goal 7:18 into the third period pulled the Terriers within one but Matteau sewed up the win with an empty-net goal.
Anna Zikova and Lydia Murray had assists for UMaine and Carly Jackson finished with 17 saves.
Kristina Schuler had an assist for BU and Erin O’Neil wound up with 31 stops.
