BANGOR, Maine –Despite a last-minute goal by the Becker College Hawks (0-1-0), the Husson University Eagles (1-0-1) clung on to a 2-1 victory for the first win of the season for men’s soccer at Boucher Field on Saturday afternoon.

Husson defense shut down Becker’s attack, proving to be nearly unsurpassable from the first whistle, allowing only one shot on goal to squeeze through until midway through the second half.

With just six minutes left to play in the opening half, the Eagles crashed the net on a perfectly curved in corner by Bryce Hayman. Laying out head first, Ian Lee connected with the ball to earn his first goal of the season off a header.

The Eagles held onto the 1-0 advantage with a number of scoring opportunities. Determined to find the back of the net, Ali Essallamy snuck past the defenders, nearly one-on-one with the goalie and fired a shot just barely out of reach of Becker goalie, Tyler Marzocchi’s, outstretched hands, unfortunately, just inches too far to left as it smacked off the post. Husson continued to fire shots and finally, off the foot of Alvaro Valls thanks to a thru ball by Rod Ghanayem, the Eagles doubled their lead to 2-0 in the 86th minute.

The Hawks responded under 90 seconds later with a goal of their own off a breakaway. Finding the far side of the net to bring the score to 2-1, Isaiah McCaskill helped his teammates find a final surge of energy to try and tie up the game in the remaining minutes. Husson stood strong and held onto the 2-1 win.

Kyle Townsend smothered two shots in net for the Eagles.

Two Hawks saw playing time in net with Marco De Lauri starting the first 61:46 picking up four saves, and Marzocchi closing out the remainder of the match in net stopping two shots. Both goalies gave up a goal each.

Husson dominated in shots (27-5) while also holding the advantage in shots on goal (8-3) and corner kicks (6-4). Becker goalies tallied 6 saves to Husson’s 2.

“While I’m happy that we got the win today, we were far from our best,” stated Head Coach Gavin Penny. “As I mentioned yesterday, we are still nursing injuries and a lot of guys have had to play significant minutes across two days. It was evident today that we were struggling at time, but the guys fought through. We certainly have a lot of things to work on and need to be better, but we’ll take four points from six to open the season. We are looking forward to taking on St. Joe’s on Tuesday.”

Kicking off September with five consecutive road games, the men’s soccer team will take on Saint Joseph’s (Maine) on Tuesday, September 4th for a 7:00 pm start
