WORCESTER, Mass. — Ama Biney scored a game-high 19 points and Madison Beck added 17 of her own to lead WPI past the Bates women’s basketball team by a score of 60-42 Saturday afternoon.
The Engineers (4-0) outscored Bates (1-3) 33-17 in the second half to take control of the game. WPI shot 46.4% from the field while holding Bates to just 25.9% shooting in the contest.
The Bobcats played well in the first quarter, taking a 13-8 lead when sophomore Carly Christofi (Fairlawn, N.J.) converted an old fashioned three-point play with 2:35 left in the quarter. Christofi finished the game with a team-high 10 points, a pair of rebounds and a steal.
Bates led 14-13 at the end of the first quarter and the Bobcats added to their lead when sophomore Melanie Binkhorst (West Hartford, Conn.) made a layup less than a minute into the second quarter. Binkhorst followed that up with a three-pointer to make the score 19-15 in favor of Bates with 7:16 left in the half. Binkhorst tallied eight points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal on afternoon.
Biney’s layup with 5:47 left in the half tied the score at 20 before senior Emily Freedland (Marblehead, Mass.) hit a three to put Bates up 23-20. Freedland scored five points and added six rebounds for the Bobcats. The Engineers scored five unanswered points to take their first lead of the game before Christofi answered with a jumper, tying the score at 25 with 40 seconds remaining in the half.
A Beck layup gave the Engineers a slim 27-25 lead at the half.
The Bobcats kept the game close early in the third quarter. First-year Julia Middlebrook (Ridgefield, Conn.) picked off a pass and went coast-to-coast to cut the Engineer lead to 31-29 with 7:10 left in the third. After a 5-0 Engineer run, Christofi hit another three to make the score 36-32 with 4:16 to go in the quarter. But an 8-2 run to the end the quarter gave WPI a 44-34 lead entering the fourth.
The teams traded buckets to start the fourth quarter before WPI went on a 10-0 run to put the game out of reach. WPI won despite only hitting 2-11 shots from three-point range. The Engineers tallied 46 points in the paint while holding Bates to only 18.
The Bobcats are back in action Monday when they visit the University of New England. Tip is set for 6:00 p.m.
