WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Senior co-captain Bernadette Connors scored a career-high 26 points but the Williams College Ephs were too much for the Bates women’s basketball team on Sunday as the Bobcats fell 91-65 in their regular season finale.
Bates (8-15, 3-7 NESCAC) qualifies for the NESCAC Championships as the 8th seed. They will travel to Amherst to take on the Purple & White this Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
Three different players scored in double figures for both the Bobcats and the Ephs (15-9, 4-6 NESCAC) on Sunday.
Connors (Windham, N.H.) led all scorers with her 26 points. She shot 11 of 24 from the floor, pulled down seven rebounds and dished out a team-high four assists. Junior Lyse Henshaw (Brunswick, Maine) scored 13 points on 4-8 shooting and senior co-captain Allie Coppola (Tarrytown, N.Y.) chipped in 12 points and six rebounds.
Devon Caveney led the Ephs with 24 points and Lauren McCall poured in 20. Kristin Fechtelkotter added 14 points on 6-8 shooting. She also blocked six shots.
The Bobcats never led in the game but they only trailed 10-8 with 5:08 to go in the first quarter after Coppola made a pair of free throws. The Ephs proceeded to go on a 9-0 run to go up by 11 with 3:13 remaining.
Bates ended the first quarter down 25-14.
In the second quarter, the teams basically traded buckets with the Ephs outscoring Bates 19-18. Connors had a great quarter, scoring 10 points on 5-8 shooting.
Williams took a 12-point lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Bobcats struggled to score the ball in the third quarter, tallying only 13 points, with Connors scoring seven of them.
Meanwhile Williams shot 66.7% from the floor in the third to open up a 22-point lead over the Bobcats.
Overall, Williams shot 49.3% on the afternoon while Bates shot 33.3%. The Ephs also drained 11 threes to Bates’ five.
