NORTHAMPTON, Mass. — Senior Nina Davenport scored 28 points and added 10 rebounds in Bates women’s basketball’s 85-64 loss to Smith College Sunday evening in the final game of the 25th Annual Tyler Tip-Off Tournament at Ainsworth Gymnasium.

The Bobcats (0-2) took a 3-2 lead when Davenport hit a three with 8:34 remaining in the first quarter but Amanda Barriscale answered with a layup with 7:27 left in the first to put the Pioneers (3-0) up for good.

The Bobcats fell behind 38-22 in the second quarter before a 10-0 run over the next 1:02 got them back in the game. Sophomore Melanie Binkhorst (West Hartford, Conn.) and first-year Julia Middlebrook (Ridgefield, Conn.) connected on jumpers followed by six points from Davenport. But the Pioneers caught fire behind-the-arc as Lauren Bondi nailed two and Sydney Koh drained a three as the Pioneers held off the Bobcats for the rest of the period for a 47-32 lead at the break. Bondi finished the game with a team-high 24 points.
The Pioneers got ahead by as many as 29 (69-40) on Meghan Holland’s layup with 1:50 left in the third quarter. The Bobcats scored the final seven points of the quarter to go into the final period trailing 69-47. Smith maintained a comfortable double-digit lead for the remainder of the game.
