CLINTON, N.Y. — Junior Taylor Lough scored the 11th goal of her career but the Bates field hockey team’s second half rally fell just short in a 2-1 loss to No. 12 nationally ranked Montclair State Sunday afternoon.

Lough (Little Compton, R.I.) scored after the Bobcats earned a penalty corner opportunity in the 51st minute. Sophomore Grace Fitzgerald (Larchmont, N.Y.) took the penalty corner and Bates was able to get the ball in front of the net where senior Lauren Foster (Pawling, N.Y.) deflected the ball to Lough who finished with authority.

The Bobcats (0-2) played an outstanding game in the second half, outshooting the Red Hawks (4-0) by a count of 6-0 and earning five penalty corners without surrendering one to Montclair State.

But the first half did not go nearly as well for the Bobcats.

The Red Hawks were able to outshoot Bates 7-1 in the first half and earned seven penalty corners to the Bobcats’ one.

In the 13th minute of action, Kelly Watson took a penalty corner for the Red Hawks. After a couple of passes, Meghan Mollahan found Kailey Dalgauer for Dalgauer’s second goal of the season, putting the Red Hawks up 1-0.

The score remained 1-0 until the final play of the first half. Another penalty corner for Montclair State led to Victoria Rossi’s first goal of the year, on an assist from Alexis Ambrosino. Unfortunately for Bates, the score came after the clock hit 0:00 because the two teams must play out the corner until the ball is cleared out of the offensive zone or a goal is scored.

That score ended up being the difference despite the Bobcats’ excellent performance in the second half.

Lough and junior Shelbie McCormack (Tyngsborough, Mass.) led Bates with two shots apiece
