DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The Concordia University Falcons shot 50 percent from the field and exploded for 49 points in the second half to defeat the Bates men’s basketball team 82-56 Wednesday night at the Daytona Beach Shootout.

Bates (5-3) led by as many as 11 points in the first half but the Falcons (6-5) rallied to take a 33-32 lead into halftime.

Junior Nick Lynch (Westford, Mass.) made a layup with 17:04 to go in the game to put the Bobcats up 36-35 but that was their last lead in the contest. Lynch scored 12 points on 6-12 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds on the evening. He also blocked a pair of shots.

The Falcons opened up a seven-point lead before sophomore Jeff Spellman (Boston, Mass.) led a Bates rally. He made a pair of free throws with 13:43 left and followed that up with a layup with 12:45 left to cut the deficit to 43-40.

Sophomore Kody Greenhalgh (Warwick, R.I.) kept the Bobcats in the game for awhile with a pair of threes, making the score 49-46 in favor of the Falcons with 10:12 to go in the game. But the Falcons went on a 9-0 run, culminating with a Hau dunk to extend their lead to 12 with 8:58 to go. Then after Bates battled them evenly for a bit, another 9-0 run pushed the lead to 20 on a Johnson three with 4:23 left.

After shooting 41.9% as a team in the first half, the Bobcats only shot 22.6% from the field in the second half on their way to being outscored 49-24 down the stretch.

The game started off very well for the Bobcats, with senior captain Shawn Strickland (Middletown, Conn.) draining a three to give them an early 3-2 lead. After falling behind 6-5, Strickland hit another three to give the Bobcats an 8-6 edge. Back-to-back Spellman layups made the score 12-6 in favor of Bates. Spellman led the Bobcats with 13 points, four assists and three steals. Strickland grabbed five rebounds in the contest to go along with his six points.

Sophomore Tom Coyne (Falmouth, Maine) made a layup with 12:30 left in the first half and just over 30 seconds later Greenhalgh hit his first three of the game to put the Bobcats up 17-6, forcing the Falcons to call timeout.

Out of the timeout, the Falcons went on an 8-0 run to trim the Bates lead to 17-14.

After Coyne made a pair of free throws, Josh Erickson hit a three to cut the Bobcat advantage to two with 7:39 left in the half.

Spellman answered with a layup and a Lynch jumper with 6:34 to go in the half extended the Bates lead to 23-17.

Bates led by four with 2:41 left in the half after sophomore Nick Gilpin (Hampden, Maine) hit a three but the Falcons tied the score at 30 with 1:24 to go on a Johnson layup. After Spellman’s layup put Bates up 32-30, Johnson hit a three at the buzzer to give the Falcons their first lead since the third minute of action.

The Bobcats got out-rebounded 49-36 on the evening and the Falcons converted 16 second chance points to Bates’ seven.
