WATERVILLE, Maine — Haley Driscoll scored 21 points and Ainsley Burns added 17 as Colby defeated the Bates women’s basketball team 66-48 Saturday afternoon in the Bobcats’ second NESCAC game of the weekend.
Colby (6-5, 1-1 NESCAC) led from start to finish and held Bates (5-9, 0-2) under 30 percent shooting and 50 points for the second game in a row. Bates shot 10-for-10 on free throws but made 16-of-57 from the field (.281). Colby shot 48.3 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Bobcats 46-27.
Julia Middlebrook led three Bates players in double figures with 11 points, to go with a team-high five rebounds and two steals. Lyse Henshaw and Nina Davenport scored 10 points apiece and Melanie Binkhorst added nine.
Driscoll shot 10-for-16 from the field and grabbed six rebounds for Colby. Paige Russell and Emily Davis totaled eight rebounds apiece. Colby’s Katie McCrum, who led the Mules with 19 points in Colby’s non-conference win at Bates in December, played the full 40 minutes and totaled 11 rebounds to go with nine points and five assists.
Bates was limited to 3-of-16 shooting in the first quarter; Colby struggled with six turnovers — the same amount Bates totaled for the entire game — but assumed an 11-7 lead after one period.
Davenport and Middlebrook combined for nine points in the second quarter but Driscoll got hot, making 3-of-4 shots in the period as Colby’s lead rose to 27-20 at the half.
Henshaw had a big third quarter, scoring eight points while making both of her three-point attempts, but Colby used a 15-4 rebounding advantage in the period, including seven on the offensive boards, to expand the Mules’ lead to 48-31. McCrum totaled six rebounds and four assists in the period while Driscoll and Burns combined for 15 points.
Bates played a solid fourth quarter but couldn’t chip into Colby’s lead, getting outscored 18-17 over the final 10 minutes. Middlebrook scored seven points without missing a shot in the quarter, while Binkhorst and Taylor McVeigh added four points apiece.
