|Bates College||U.S. Coast Guard Academy|
The Coast Guard Academy scored eight runs in the third inning to run away from the Bobcats, defeating Bates 16-3 in five innings Friday afternoon.
Julia Ferris (2-1) struck out seven batters over the course of five innings to earn the win for the Coast Guard. Sophomore Sam Fellers (Mendham, N.J.) went the distance but suffered the loss for Bates in the circle.
Bates fell in a quick 4-0 hole in the top of the first.
With two outs and nobody on, Emma Hvozdovich drew a walk. Then the Coast Guard strung together three consecutive hits, including a two-RBI triple from Casey Cruzpino and a Sharayah Simco RBI double to go ahead 3-0. After another walk, Emily Hogan singled in the fourth run of the inning.
Bates responded right away in the bottom of the first. After Russo reached on an error, Crowley got hit by a pitch. Inlow singled to load the bases and Fitzgerald doubled in a pair of runs. One out later, Treadwell singled home Inlow to cut the deficit to 4-3.
But a pair of strike outs ended the inning with no further damage to the Coast Guard.
Russo tallied a pair of hits but that was the extent of the offense for the remainder of the game for the Bobcats. The Coast Guard scored three in the second to extend their lead to 7-3. Then they added eight in the third. The inning began with five consecutive hits, an error, a walk and another hit before Bates recorded an out on a fielder’s choice. Seven runs scored before an out was recorded and they added one more on a two-out RBI single from Carly Hattman.
Bates struggled on defense in the game, committing five errors and surrendering four unearned runs.
Russo finished 2-3 with a run scored and Fitzgerald went 1-3 with a double and two runs batted in.
