BRUNSWICK, Maine — First-year goalkeeper Alyssa Souza made three saves but the Bates field hockey team only recorded two shots in a 3-0 loss to No. 1 nationally ranked Bowdoin Wednesday night.

Bates (2-1, 1-1 NESCAC) and Bowdoin (3-0, 2-0 NESCAC) remained scoreless through the first seven minutes of action. The Bobcats were able to block the Polar Bears first two shot attempts. But at the 7:19 mark Emily McColgan found Johna Cook for the first goal of the game.

At the 9:44 mark, Bowdoin struck again when Mettler Growney found Kimmy Ganong to make the score 2-0 in favor of the defending national runner-ups.

Souza (Scarborough, Maine) recorded her first save of the match at the 15:13 mark when she stopped a shot by Bowdoin’s Kara Finnerty. She recorded her second save of the first half in the 27th minute, denying Sarah Jane Weill’s shot.

Trailing 2-0 to start the second half, Bates came out strong when sophomore Adah Lindquist (Wayne, Pa.) tallied a shot on goal in the 37th minute. Bowdoin keeper Clara Belitz was able to stop the shot though for her first save of the night.

In the 52nd minute of action, Ganong recorded her second goal of the night on an assist from Elizabeth Bennewitz.

Junior Lauren Foster (Pawling, N.Y.) recorded Bates’ second shot of the game in the 55th minute but Belitz recorded another save.

Souza denied Ganong’s attempt to record a hat trick with her third save of the night coming at the 59:16 mark.

The Polar Bears out-shot Bates 9-2 and took eight penalty corners to the Bobcats’ none in the match.

The match was a physical one with the teams combining for three green cards and two yellow cards.
