Orono, Maine — Kaitlyn Ball tallied a pair of goals and was one of five Black Bears who scored on the evening as the University of Maine women’s soccer team defeated Assumption, 6-0, in exhibition action at Mahaney Diamond.
Anetra Byfield, Vivien Beil, Beate Naglestad and Genaya Loftis each tallied single goals in Maine’s victory. Shannon Armitage added a pair of assists while Kendra Ridley, Emilie Andersen and Nicole Bailey each added helpers. In all, nine Black Bears got in on the scoring line in the win.
Beil began the scoring, carrying the ball in from midfield before releasing a shot from 25-yards out into the left side of the net, 12:50 into the first half.
Bailey found Byfield at the 35:19 mark for Maine’s second goal, capitalizing from close range on the tally.
Naglestad scored the first of Maine’s four second half goals at 52:02, taking a feed from Armitage and finding the back of the net.
Just over four minutes later, Maine took a 4-0 lead when Ridley punched a pass through the box to Loftis who beat the Assumption keeper.
Ball finished Maine’s scoring with a pair of goals, first coming at 71:30 when Armitage tallied her second assist of the game, sliding a one touch pass through the box to Ball who completed the goal scoring play. Ball again found the back of the net, under three minutes later, when Andersen’s soft touch through the middle found Ball who had an easy one-touch shot that clipped the left post and crossed the goal line.
Maine opens the regular season on Friday, Aug. 19 when it travels to take on LIU-Brooklyn at 5 p.m.
