STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph’s College (7-9, 4-2 GNAC) posted a pair of mercy-rule victories over Anna Maria College (3-15, 1-7 GNAC) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) softball action at Richard W. Bailey Field on Sunday afternoon. The Monks defeated the AMCATS 9-1 in the opener and swept the two-game set with an 11-3 triumph in the closing contest.

GAME ONE – SAINT JOSEPH’S 9, ANNA MARIA 1 (5 INNINGS)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks scored twice off a hit and an Anna Maria miscue in the bottom of the first and made it a 4-1 game with two runs off three hits, including a double from freshman left fielder Kaylee Burns (Saco, Maine), in the bottom of the fourth. St. Joe’s wrapped up the opener with five runs off five hits in the fifth, as junior Kelsy Gaddy (Limington, Maine) plated a pair with a bases-loaded single and Burns belted a two-run double to help the hosts notch their second-consecutive eight-run-rule victory.

IN THE CIRCLE:

Saint Joseph’s senior Kylie McFadden (Dover, N.H.) improved to 4-3 on the season after allowing an unearned run off four hits and three walks with a pair of K’s in five innings. Anna Maria starter Alexis Romano falls to 1-7 after yielding nine runs (eight earned) off 11 hits and two walks in 4.1 innings. Reliever Kathryn Rendock allowed a hit in 1/3 inning of work.

OFF THE BAT – SAINT JOSEPH’S:

  • Burns was 3-3 with two runs, two doubles, and three RBI
  • Sophomore shortstop Meghan Elliott (Blackstone, Mass.) went 2-3 with a run, a double, and an RBI
  • Senior third baseman Mariah Harrison (Buxton, Maine) was 2-2 with two runs and a double
  • Gaddy went 1-2 with a run, a stolen base, and a pair of RBI

OFF THE BAT – ANNA MARIA:

  • Second baseman Victoria Falco was 1-3 with a double
  • Catcher Mackenzie Shurtleff went 1-2 with a run scored

GAME TWO – SAINT JOSEPH’S 11, ANNA MARIA 3 (5 INNINGS)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks set the tone right off the bat with four runs off three hits in the bottom of the first and proceeded to score twice in the third with five runs in the fourth to stake an 11-3 cushion. Freshman pitcher Kate Whitney (Jonesboro, Maine) tossed a clean fifth to help the hosts earn their second mercy-rule win of the afternoon.

IN THE CIRCLE:

Whitney (1-3) picked up her first collegiate victory after allowing three runs off five hits and a walk with three strikeouts in five innings. Anna Maria starter Kathryn Rendock took the loss after fiving up 11 runs (five earned) off 11 hits and two walks over four frames.

OFF THE BAT – SAINT JOSEPH’S:

  • Bailey was 3-3 with a run and five RBI
  • Senior center fielder Carla Tripp (Lovell, Maine) went 2-2 with two runs, a walk, and a stolen base
  • Elliott was 2-3 with two runs and a double

OFF THE BAT – ANNA MARIA:

  • Right fielder Sarah Coley was 2-2 with a double and a run scored
  • Designated player Hannah Trudo knocked in a pair of runs
