WATERVILLE, Maine — Amherst College used a shorthanded goal to break a 1-1 tie on the way to a 5-1 victory over Colby College in NESCAC women’s hockey Saturday at Alfond Rink.
The Purple & White move to 9-4-2 overall and 5-3-2 in the league, while the Mules drop to 0-13-3 and 0-9-1 in the conference.
Alex Toupal had two goals and two assists, including the first goal of the game at 7:55 of the opening period. The Mules turned the puck over in their own zone to Toupal, who went in on goal and scored on a backhand.
The Mules tied the game at 1-1 at 6:50 of the second period. Anna Rudinski’s blast from the left point was tipped in by Katie McLaughlin for her third goal of the season. Bella Papapetros also had an assist on the play.
After a body checking call on Amherst, Toupal took advantage of another Colby turnover near the Purple & White blue line. Toupal came in hard on net and Halley Fine was there to make the save. However, Katie Savage slammed in the rebound from in front for her seventh goal.
Jocelyn Hunyadi and Katelyn Pantera caused a turnover behind the Colby net on the third Amherst goal. Hunyadi came around the goal and stuffed the puck in at the left post.
Toupal scored her 13th of the season at 16:47 of the second period. She took a pass from Sara Culhane, came in on the left side, and blasted a high shot over the blocker of Fine.
The Purple & White scored the final goal on the power play at 10:58 of the final period. Caitlyn Ryan passed the puck to Toupal near the right post to start the play. Toupal immediately pushed the puck across the crease to Culhane at the left post for the goal.
Sabrina Dobbins stopped 16 of her 26 saves in the second period. Fine stopped 14 of her 28 in the opening period.
