Presque Isle, ME – The Owls Women’s Basketball team (8-15) would need a fourth quarter comeback to end their regular season on a three game win streak. The Alfred State Pioneers (14-9) would let an early lead slip away and lose on the road by a score of 63-59.
The Pioneers would start the game red hot, knocking down ten of 17 field goal attempts in the first quarter, as well as going five of eight from the free throw line to score 25 points in the first quarter. Catherine Bialecki (SO, Almond, NY) would contribute 14 points in the quarter, and Alfred State held a 25-12 after the first period. Both offenses would struggle in the second period, and the Owls would go to the locker room trailing by a score of 35-22.
UMPI would not improve their shooting in the third quarter, but getting to the charity strip eight times and converting all of them would cut into the Alfred State lead. The Owls would tie the game with 2:30 on the clock in the third, but the Pioneers would end the quarter with five unanswered points to reclaim the lead.
The Owls would start the final period on a small run to tie the game with 6:41 remaining. Bialecki would give the Pioneers back the lead with a free throw, and then extend it with two jump shots. The Owls would respond, and with 3:23 remaining, Rhylee Wright would hit a three-point basket to tie the game at 51. UMPI would take the lead for the first time since the first quarter when Kylee Alton (SR, Burnham, ME) would hit a jumper. With just under two minutes, Alfred State would pull within two, but the Owls would respond. Sydney Churchill (SR, Fort Fairfield, ME) would hit a three that would put the home team up by five. The Pioneers would respond, but with time winding down, they were forced to foul to extend the game. Churchill would hit the free throws and the Owls would end the afternoon with a 63-59 victory.
UMPI was led by Amanda Hotham (SR, Fort Fairfield, ME) with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Wright would also record a double-double scoring 16 points and grabbing 16 rebounds. Churchill would score 17 in the win. Bialecki would lead the Pioneers with 30 points and 11 rebounds.
