DANBURY, Conn. – Sophomore forward Rashard Rodriguez (Trumbull, CT) scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Western Connecticut State University men’s basketball team over visiting University of Southern Maine, 82-62 at Feldman Arena on Saturday afternoon.
R-Rod connected on 8-of-11 shots from the field including 4-of-6 from beyond the three-point arc. He also led, along with Jauch Green (Hartford, CT), the team with seven rebounds on the afternoon.
Joining Rodriguez in double figures was Green with 16 points along with Aaron Samuel (Stratford, CT) and Bobby Bynum (New Haven, CT) with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Leading the way for the Huskies, now 7-12 overall and 2-7 in the Little East Conference, were James Starks II (Miami, Fla.) and Zach Leal (York, Maine). Jacob Littlefield (Mechanic Falls, Maine) added 10 markers for the visitors. Leal is now four points shy of the coveted 1,000-point plateau.
Southern Maine led by five points, 17-12, following a jumper in the paint from Fred Knight (Hampden, Maine) with 11:18 left in the first half. The Colonials would outscore the Huskies, 24-12 before intermission to take a 36-29 lead into the locker room.
The long three-pointer by Rashard Rodriguez 28 seconds into the second half increased the Colonials’ lead into double figures and their advantage stayed that way the rest of the way.
