WATERVILLE, Maine — A group at Common Street Arts will try to create the World’s Longest Poem to celebrate National Poetry Month from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9. Children, teens and even adults will write poems, decorate them wildly and then glue them together to make the longest poem possible. In the past, the poem has reached 60 feet, been hung out of a two-story window to reach the sidewalk below and even been held like a jump rope to do the limbo underneath. How long this one can be will only be determined by how many folks show up to add their own special effort.
Dixfield Poet Kelly Sterns will be in town to lead the event, one that she has been creating for more than a decade at various museums, schools and art centers in various states. Sterns says, “If you let yourself have a little fun, poetry is painless!” An archive in Brazil has shown interest in one of her earliest efforts, a poem that was worked on for over a month and reached over sixty feet. “20 Years Of Creativity: Harwood Art Center” called the project one of their “favorite memories.”
This may be the year of the poet in Maine, since Bethel poet Richard Blanco was chosen to perform at the president’s inauguration in January. Blanco came back home to perform to a sold out crowd in Portland in February, introduced by current Maine poet laureate, Wesley McNair. If poetry isn’t actually painless in 2013, maybe it’s at least a little bit fun.

Common Street Arts is located at 16 Common St. right across City Hall in Waterville. Tickets $15. (Buy a kid’s ticket and get an adult ticket free.) Tickets for the entire series of writing classes, including the special spring break class are only $60. For more information www.commonstreetarts.com or 872-ARTS.
