Ellsworth: Woodlawn is pleased to offer two printmaking workshops in July where participants can learn different techniques for this exciting, colorful art.

On Tuesday, July 17th, from 10 am to 4 pm, artist Debra Arter will lead a Monotype Printing workshop using non-toxic inks, clear styrene, and a pin press. A pin press is an artist quality rolling pin of sorts that allows for portable printing. Lots of fun and engaging results await those who sign up for this colorful workshop. Everyone will create at least 12 prints and end up with many variations which may be hand colored, over printed or used for collage in the end. The brilliant bold colors of Akua inks and spontaneity of monotypes will appeal to painters as well as beginners alike. Embedded imagery, botanical prints and multiple color printing will be demonstrated. The beauty of Maine is easily captured in this facile medium for beginners and advanced alike. Debra Arter is a member of the Boston Printmakers and has been creating monotypes for over a decade.

On Friday, July 20, from 10 am to 3 pm, artist Holly Berry will lead a Linoleum Block Printing workshop. In this hands-on workshop, participants will experience creating a multicolor print from a single block of linoleum. The process involves carving a linoleum block and printing in sequence. Each color is printed separately then cut away from the block before introducing the next color. Holly Berry has illustrated several award winning children’s books and shown her linoleum block prints in galleries and exhibits throughout the country. She is a member of The Boston Printmakers and serves on the board of Midcoast Printmakers’s, Inc.

The cost for each workshop is $80 for Woodlawn members/$90 for non-members. As space is limited for both workshops, pre-registration is required by calling Woodlawn at 667-8671.
