The University of Maine chapter of the Best Buddies organization will be hosting a fundraising event from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, at Bangor’s Applebee’s to raise money for future Best Buddies outings.
Best Buddies is an organization whose main goal is to establish a worldwide volunteer movement that brings together college students and individuals in the local community with intellectual and developmental disabilities to form personal, life-long friendships.
UMaine student Chelsea O’Meara and President of Best Buddies founded the chapter this past fall, making it the first recognized chapter in the state of Maine.
“I am pleased to see our organization become so successful and widely recognized by UMaine students, faculty and members of our community in such a short period of time,” O’Meara said. “I am privileged to be able to work with the leaders of the Best Buddies Officers team and the supportive peers who have helped with the development of UMaine’s Best Buddies.”
Over 60 participants are currently involved in Best Buddies with 15 friendship matches. These personal, one-to-one friendships are built upon communication the participants have during the week and the monthly required outings Best Buddies puts on.
Upcoming outings for Best Buddies include; their Valentine’s Day Dance, Movie Night, Best Buddies Sporting Games and a Farwell Prom. Applebee’s will donate 15 percent of the check when you dine at their Bangor location on 718 Hogan Road on Wednesday, Feb. 20.
