Traditional Pack Basket & Root Basket Making: Pack baskets were traditionally used while trapping, ice fishing, collecting herbs and plants, and as a pack-basket on canoe trips. This workshop will lead you through creating a complete basket from the base supports to the pack straps. Root baskets were traditionally utilitarian collection vessels. The origins of construction used split roots, approximately pencil-size in diameter, and willow shoots or other pliable vines.
Participants asked to please bring: misc. tools such as cutting blade/clippers (e.g., utility knife, straight tin snips, etc.), small spring clamps to hold reed in place, measuring tape, pencil, etc.
Instructor: Nancy Reitze (www.oldturtle.org)
Saturday, October 13, 9 am – 5 pm, Class fee: $64, Materials fee: $65 for pack basket; $10 for root basket
