To Tell The Truth: A Workshop in Memory & Storytelling with Susan Hand Shetterly
Narrative nonfiction and memoir use the truth as if it were clay to make stories. But the truth depends on who tells the story. There are often contradictory versions. Come prepared to explore your stories, your truths—and to imagine those of others. We will use writing exercises, pictures, dialogue, and descriptions of place to evoke this complicated idea of telling stories about what happens in the real world and in the world of our imaginations, and how time affects what we know and what we don’t.
Susan Hand Shetterly is the author of two collections of narrative essays, five children’s books, and numerous articles and essays in magazines such as Audubon, Down East, Yankee, National Wildlife, Sanctuary, and Habitat. She was a contributing writing to Maine Times for fifteen years. She has received a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, two Individual Artist Fellowship Grants from the Maine Arts Commission, and she has been a resident at Yaddo. Last year, her book Settled in the Wild won the 2011 Maine Literary Award for nonfiction.
