To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the death of Henry David Thoreau, the theater at the Union Street Brick Church is presenting the play “The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail.” The play follows Thoreau’s life from a jail cell, where he was placed for not his paying his taxes to protest the Mexican-American War. First performed in 1970 the play was described by George Oppenheimer of “Newsday” as “a superior play, a literary work as well as a theatrical experience…” Other works by the authors, Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, include: “Inherit the Wind, “Mame”, “The Gang’s All Here,” and “Shangri La.” Ralph Waldo Emerson, Thoreau’s mentor, was pastor of the Union Street Brick Church in Bangor in the mid-1800s.
