Emerson and Thoreau return to Bangor

It’s an amazing, little-known fact of Bangor history that the famous philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson served as an interim pastor at Bangor’s Union Street Brick Church, and that his equally famous, erratic idealist friend, Henry David Thoreau, came to Bangor to visit him.

On this, the 150th anniversary of Thoreau’s death, the Union Street Brick Church is presenting the two act play, The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail, a witty, profoundly moving story of the relationship between the rather formal Emerson and the back-to-nature hippie, Thoreau. It also tells of the love Henry and his brother John both held for Henry’s beautiful young student, Ellen.

The show opens Friday, November 16, at the Union Street Brick Church (corner Union and Main St., downtown Bangor) at 7 pm, and repeats on Sat., Nov. 17 at 7 pm. There will be a Sunday matinee at 3 pm. Admission is free, and refreshments will be served. For more information, call 945-9798.
