BRUNSWICK, Maine — The Coastal Humane Society is once again gearing up for the organization’s Paws for a Cause fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 24, as part of L.L. Bean’s Dog Days of August.

What has traditionally been a one-mile walking-only event will include a 5K run at 8 a.m. (7:15 a.m. registration) starting at Memorial Park in Freeport.  As in years past, at 10 a.m., animal lovers are invited to come together and walk around Freeport to show their support for shelter animals.

This is the fourth year Paws for a Cause has been in a collaboration with L.L. Bean’s Dog Days of August celebration. Last year, the walk and Dog Days event attracted more than 100 walkers, and hundreds more spectators and other participants. Close to 200 dogs congregated among their biggest fans in Discovery Park.

Following the 5K and walk are the popular dog contests for Best Kisser, Best Barker, Best Costume, Best Tail-Wagger, and Pet/Owner Look-Alike.  The rest of the day features demonstrations by expert dog handlers, including returning favorites Officer Michelle Small of the Bath Police Department and her police dog and pal  “Sampson.” Other instructional workshops, booths, raffles, and giveaways will be offered throughout the day, along with on-site veterinarian Q & A with Dr. Mandie Wehr, obedience training, a rabies vaccination and microchip clinic (dogs only), and lots of other family and dog-friendly activities.

“This is our biggest and most fun fundraiser” said Karen Stimpson, executive director of the Coastal Humane Society.  “Last year, our ‘Dog Walk’ brought in $25,000 of much needed support for our animals, and we plan to do even better this year!”

Generous prizes are being provided by L.L. Bean. Each dog contest winner will receive a $25 gift card, and runners and walkers will receive gift cards for collecting pledge donations in support of the cause. Those that raise $100, $250, $500, and $1,000 will receive $10, $25, $50, and $100 gift cards to L.L. Bean, respectively.  Every official walker will get a free T-shirt.

Everyone is invited to view the full schedule of events and sign up online at Paper pledge sheets are also available. Dogs in good health are invited to participate in the 5k, the one-mile walk, or any of the day’s other activities. Anyone interested in volunteering is warmly invited to help out and may call 449-1366 ext. 1.

CHS is looking forward to sharing a day of fun and fundraising in celebration of our four-legged friends!
