Summer Family Events at Herring Gut Learning Center

Port Clyde- Herring Gut Learning Center will offer campus tours throughout the summer during the Summer Community Market run by teens participating in the First Work Experience program. The Market will offer a variety of fresh produce grown by the First Work Summer Gardeners as well as fresh cheeses from Bittersweet Heritage Farms and fish from Port Clyde Fresh Catch. It will be held every Thursday from 10AM-3PM beginning July 5th and continuing through August 23rd on Lobster Pound Road alongside Port Clyde Fresh Catch.

A Salt Water Science Series for families will be held on Tuesday evenings in July and August and will include hands-on activities and interactive presentations. Events, unless otherwise noted, will take place at Herring Gut Learning Center. All events are free and open to the public, no registration necessary. All ages are welcome.

Tuesday, July 24th, 6:30-7:30PM: Seabirds of Maine with Susan “Seabird” Schubel: An interactive presentation all about shorebirds with Disney Conservation Hero and Audubon Seabird Restoration Program’s Susan Schubel.

Tuesday, July 31st, 6:30-7:30PM: Crabs- The Good, the Bad, and the Beautiful: A deeper look at Maine’s invasive species of crabs, and why horseshoe crabs are not actually crabs at all!

Tuesday, August 7th, 8:30-10PM: Family Nighttime Beach Walk: Meet at the Drift Inn Beach Parking Lot and bring your flashlights for a night-hike adventure of nocturnal beach-creature discovery!

Tuesday, August 14th, 6:30-7:30PM: The Marvelous and Mysterious Maine Lobster: A series of presentations and activities surrounding Maine’s most notorious shellfish including how to band a lobster, a look at the lobster’s lifecycle via live specimens, and a discussion of the lobster industry to pound to plate.
