Digging Deeper into the Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Co. Collection
Kevin Johnson, photo archivist for the Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport, returns to the Stockton Springs Community Library on Wednesday, June 20 at 7:00 PM to present a slideshow. “Digging Deeper into the Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Company Collection” will feature a range of images from the PMM’s extensive glass plate image archive.
The Eastern Illustrating and Publishing Co. was a real photo postcard manufacturer based in Belfast from 1909-1950′s. During the five decades it was in operation, it photographed extensively all over New England and upstate New York. There are many different ways to explore this amazing collection and this presentation will examine some of the varied subjects and places captured by the cameras of the Eastern Illustrating photographers. From steamships to rowboats, post offices to churches, hotels to summer camps, this presentation will run the gamut and give photo archivist, Kevin Johnson an opportunity to share some of his favorite photographs that he has uncovered in the 7 years he has been working with the collection.
Johnson was working at the Maine Photographic Workshops in 2007 as a teaching assistant and also working to preserve the negatives of the Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Co. which were owned by MPW at the time. In 2007, a flood in the building where the negatives were housed prompted MPW to donate the collection to the Penobscot Marine Museum. Johnson accompanied the negatives, becoming the photo archivist for all the museum’s photographic collections. Johnson is a photographer himself and co-owns Åarhus Gallery in Belfast.
Penobscot Marine Museum, which acquired the collection of nearly 50,000 glass plate and film negatives in 2007, launched their online database late last year and now more than 25,000 of these photographs are available for viewing on their website at www.penobscotmarinemuseum.org.
The Stockton Springs Community Library is an all volunteer library located in the historic Colcord House, which is owned by the Stockton Springs Historical Society. Everyone is invited to attend the slideshow. Admission is free and refreshments will be served.
