The “Art in the Park” programwill feature a woven twig sculpture by artist Susan Perrine. The sculpture will be unveiled in Johnson Park on Water Street, May 3rd at 5:00pm, as part of the Gardiner Artwalk, and will be displayed through October. The public is invited to a reception beginning at 4:30pm at Circling the Square Fine Art Press before the unveiling at 5pm that will kick off the Artwalk which begins at 5:30pm.
Susan began weaving twig sculpture as a way to teach weaving on a large scale. Susan Perrine’s work reflects on her connection to the natural environment. She states, “I grew up on a farm and have always spent a lot of time outdoors, walking the fields and woods near home. I try to use methods and materials to reflect the connection I feel towards the natural environment.” Susan will be showing at Artwalk after the reception in the park where her sculpture will reside.
The public will have an opportunity to participate in the actual construction of the piece, which will be made from locally sourced materials. Perrine uses her sculptures to teach about the art and craft of weaving at many different scales. Her twig structures are an easy way to demonstrate how simple materials, when aligned carefully can create useful and beautiful works of art. The public build will take place on Saturday, April 27th, from 11am-1pm.
