Belfast. Concepts in Oceanography (SMS 110/111) will be offered this June and July on Monday and Wednesday evenings at the University of Maine Hutchinson Center. SMS 110 includes two weekly lectures and a weekly laboratory and is open to anyone interested in gaining an introductory scientific understanding of oceanography.
Learn about physical, chemical, and biological aspects of the world’s oceans, how these components interact to function as an ocean system, how ocean systems change through time, and the science behind current events related to the Gulf of Maine and global oceans.
Laboratories will include field measurements and local sampling in Penobscot Bay, studies of intertidal and marine organisms from the Gulf of Maine, discussion of current issues related to oceans and local marine ecosystems, computer-based activities with Gulf of Maine buoy data, and a day-long Saturday field trip to the University of Maine Darling Marine Center with a half-day voyage aboard the research vessel, the Ira C.
Individuals are encouraged to sign up for the lecture and the laboratory together, but the lecture may be taken without the lab. The course is taught by School of Marine Sciences professor Dr. William Ellis.
SMS 110/111 is for students, teachers, fishermen, naturalists, and any citizens who would like to understand the science of Earth’s oceans, and in particular, our local Gulf of Maine system. The lecture alone meets the University of Maine applied sciences general education requirement; the lecture and lab together meet the lab science general education requirement. No prerequisites are required other than an eagerness to learn.
The course meets from June 4th to July 18th on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm, and the lab meets on Mondays from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm.
