The Oriental Jade Restaurant is pleased to announce it will celebrate Chinese New Year and the “Year of the Snake”, February 10-17, by hosting a special traveling photography exhibit, CHINA: Exploring the Interior, 1903-1904, as well as a week of Culture and Arts Festivities.

The exhibit was produced in association with the Chinese Room of the Newport (R.I.) Public Library and the Maine Humanities Council. In 1903, R. Harvey Sargent, a

native of Sedgwick, Maine, and a topographer with the U.S. Geological Survey, joined a Carnegie Institution expedition that took him 1,800 miles across the vast interior of China. Along the way, Sargent documented his observations with photographs of the land and the peasants from which the Chinese Revolution was to come. The core of

this exhibit consists of 74 of these original photographs, which have been enlarged and reproduced to museum standards. Oriental Jade will have nearly 50 of the photos on display.

The Year of the Snake celebration begins on Sunday, February 10th with a special opening for the exhibit. The explorer’s grandson, Robert M. Sargent, who helped organize the exhibit, will speak briefly at 2 p.m. about Harvey Sargent’s life and times. During the Exhibit Opening and New Year week, all Oriental Jade guests will enjoy an authentic Chinese New Year feast. New Year delicacies including fish, jai, chicken, noodles, dumplings, fruit, Niango, and New Year’s Cakes will be served along with many Asian favorites. Guests will also find many free, family-oriented festivities throughout the week, including the traditional Lion Dance with drums, various cultural activities and a Welcome New Year Fireworks on Feb 10th at 5pm.

In addition to the festivities, a selection of Asian-inspired florals and Bonsai trees will also be on display from February 10th to 17th. Working in conjunction with Maine Discovery Museum, guests can also view the Photography Exhibit at the Museum from February 20th through March 3rd. The Museum will celebrate it’s opening for the Exhibit on Wednesday, February 27th from 3:30 to 5pm. For details and a schedule of events, please visit or
