Learn about an important part of Maine’s garden history! The Beatrix Farrand Society will host 13 Open Days at Garland Farm in summer 2012. Open Days allow Mount Desert Island residents and guests to visit the last home and gardens of prominent landscape architect Beatrix Farrand (1872-1959). The house and gardens will be open from 1:00 – 5:00 pm each Thursday, June 21 through September 13, 2012.
Gardeners can learn much about color, texture, plant selection and design from Farrand’s Terrace Garden, recently restored to rave reviews. Garland Farm’s library holds many volumes of interest to gardeners, historians, botanists and designers. The grounds feature plants prized by Farrand, elegant garden features, and glimpses into Mount Desert’s past. A special exhibit that includes a painting of the Satterlee Garden, along with photographs and drawings of this early Farrand design, will be on display starting July 5. The Satterlee Garden, which Farrand designed in 1916, was partially destroyed in the 1947 fire.
There is no cost to visit Garland Farm on Open Days, but donations are welcome. Volunteers will be on hand to answer questions, and printed guides to the house and gardens will be available. Individuals and small groups are welcome, but due to parking restrictions we cannot accommodate busses and RVs.
