Michael Luxner, professor of music at Millikin University and music director and conductor of the Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra, will discuss some of the ways in which scientific minds have approached the art of music, from Pythagoras’ discovery of the harmonic series to MRI-based studies in musical cognition. “Scientific” approaches to music may include broader trends of intellectual history, from theological cosmology (“music of the spheres”) to the Age of Reason to modernism.
